Too Big For The Room
Thrifting with the Boys
Presented at eBay on Location
Philadelphia on September 6th

Bryan and Jason were overwhelmed at the huge turn-out for their seminar at eBay on Location!  The room was not only filled to capacity, but according to sources over 100 more were turned away and could not attend the 'Sourcing Product Outside Your Comfort Zone' presentation by the 'Boys'.

The lively seminar included not one, but two interactive thrift store shopping challenges live on stage!  Bryan and Jason want to thank the four random participants Kris and Margie who competed on t-shirts also Ralph and Sean who went head to head on Hawaiian casual shirts.  Special kudos to Ralph who had the largest number of correct answers overall.

Helping Thrifters One on One - The Personal Touch

As anyone who hangs around Thrifting With The Boys knows, Jason is into tiki mugs and
all things Polynesian.  Because of this, anyone with questions about tiki mugs asks Jason for help and guidance. On May 7th, Lynnette Seymour posted in the Thrifting-with-the-Boys Facebook group a question about a tiki mug she had found for $2.25 at the Community Thrift in San Francisco.  Lynette had been shopping nearby at the two-story Thrift Town and while checking out, the cashier told her about the Community Thrift store. Lynnette headed over and while wandering the aisles, noticed most everything seemed overpriced.  She stopped to look at what she thought was a vase. Thinking it might be tiki, fliiped it over and noticed it said
Toy Story 3.  Lynette figured it might be worth about $30 and purchased it

To give a little history on Lynnette, she has been selling on Ebay since 1997, but not seriously until 2004. Hair care products being her main product line. Then, in 2006, she discovered Lynn Dralle and went to Lynn’s first Boot Camp (where Lynn teaches people how to sell on Ebay). It was the best decision Lynnette ever made. Lynnette's day job is a meeting planner and worked that full time until the economy went into the dumper. She was then moved to part time and was able to keep paying her bills because of selling on Ebay.

Bryan Goodman and Jason Smith did a Teleseminar with Lynn Dralle in the fall of 2011. The 'Boys' talked about many thrift store items to search for including t-shirts, Hawaiian Shirts and all about tiki mugs. As a member of the Lynn’s Queen’s Court, Lynette could have listened live or downloaded and listened to it at a later time.  Lynnette and her husband Curtis Stansfield finally downloaded it and listened in February. They got a lot out of the teleseminar and realized they could divide and conquer a thrift store.  Before the teleseminar, she had never looked for tiki mug and had never sold anything tiki.

Lynnette brought the mug home, did some research and noticed one like it sold for $700 to benefit a charity. Confident she had something good, Lynnette figured her mug might not reach the same amount as one for a charity, but was unsure how much less. Lynnette was already a member of the Thrifting-with-the-Boys Facebook group but  hesitant to post and ask about the mug.  A friend talked her into posting her find and  as soon as she did Jason got in contact with her immediately.  Jason was excited to tell Lynnette that she had  found  one of the rarest modern tiki mugs. It is a Holy Grail for many tiki mug collectors like Jason.

Jason went on to explain that the director for the Pixar movie Toy Story 3, Lee Unkrich is a huge fan of tiki mugs.  He had contracted Munktiki (Custom tiki mug company from Oregon) to make a custom tiki mug for him to give the crew as a Thank You gift. Only 500 were made and each individually numbered. The mug depicts Woody as a Moai tiki on side and Buzz Lightyear as a grimacing tiki on the other side. Obviously the crew member who received this wasn’t too fond of it and thus, it ended up at the thrift store.

After giving Lynnette the information Jason then offered her $400 for the mug for his own collection. Jason fully disclosed it was worth much more, but that was all he could afford.  Lynnette politely declined and got ready to list it on Ebay.  Jason helped her with the listing and told her he would be the first bidder and bid his initial offer of $400.  Jason remained the high bidder for a few days, then got left in the dust.  Leading up to the last minute of the auction, the mug had reached $712.  In the last second it jumped to an astounding $1140.99

The same week the mug sold, Curtis, a 5th Grade teacher, found out he might not have a job in the fall.  All the stars aligned perfectly for Lynette to have this awesome return on a $2.25 thrift store investment.

Lynette and Curtis have been married for seven years.  They don’t have any two legged kids,
but do have two mutts.  They met while volunteering for the ASPCA in Sacramento.  Curtis does all the eBay shipping and Amazon FBA.  Lynette is thrilled with the ability to thrift shop locally and sell worldwide via her eBay store: Shyfleas Style Store.

FOLKLORE: Origin of the name "Thrifting with the Boys"

Bryan fully takes credit for the name "Thrifting with the Boys". It popped in his head while driving from one thrift store to another and hearing someone say "I'm out Thrifting with the Boys". The phrase soon became the basis of the Jason and Bryan empire, grabbing the domain, starting a Thrifting Facebook Group that has quickly risen in popularity and fast become a favorite of the many very active participants.

What is "Thrifting with the Boys" ?

Thrifting with the Boys started in early 2011 while friends Jason and Bryan united to 'share' hints and tips about acquiring items for resale at thrift stores.  After an eBay event in Las Vegas, the two "Boys" ventured to a number of thrift stores along with a group of friends. Hilarity ensued! Not only did they laugh, but they shared great ideas about what to buy and what to pass up. The "Boys" both left with tons of great stuff to resell on eBay.

As Pineapple, a favorite thrifting friend from New Orleans proclaimed on that outing "Dudes, you're onto something". With Pineapple's validation, Jason and Bryan realized what they were doing could be beneficial to many eBay sellers who already were shopping at thrift stores for products. They suspected many aspiring sellers looking for inspiration and direction about what to sell and where to get products, would also be interested in their methods of sourcing.

As a result of that trip, Jason attempted to secure the "Boys" a speaking engagement at the eBay Radio Party Conference in June of 2011. His efforts paid off and apprehensively the "Boys" were given a spot early in the morning when it looked 'safe' to let a couple of well-liked fellows try this unique presentation for the first time. The seminar was a smash hit, very well received and left the very attentive audience clamoring for more. Ebay Radio Party immediately booked the "Boys" for 2012.  That first presentation led to a booking for the Kansas Jubilee at the end of September.  Other speaking engagements followed. If you are interested in arranging for the "Boys" to entertain, teach and speak at your event, get a hold of them at:BryanAndJason@ThriftingWithTheBoys.com.

About: Jason Smith

Picture
One of Jason's earliest childhood memories is of  thirfting and going to garage sales with his mom and grandma.  From that moment on, the thrifting bug had a hold of him.  While it has always been a part of his life, it didn't become very import until 2000. By 2000, Jason had been on Ebay for 2 years, but hadn't very active.  Then in early 2000, Jason lost his dream job and out of necessity, started selling CDs on Ebay to earn some extra money until a new job came along. Jobs came and went, but Ebay was always constant.  He then understood the power of Ebay. What started as a hobby, turned into a little extra income and is now a full time job.  In the last 3 years, Jason has increased his Ebay business so much, that he hired his first assistant this summer. With her handling the day to day activities, it has afforded Jason time to work on his new venture, Thrifting With The Boys with his good friend Bryan Goodman. Jason & Bryan are making it their goal to teach everyone how to get the most out of the thrifting experience.

About: Bryan Goodman

Picture
Bryan began his eBay career at the age of 12. Really he did!  His first job was packing and shipping product for a neighbor.  Those skills stayed with him for many years and when the need to ship products sold world-wide, the shipping part was a breeze. Bryan spent 15 years in sales specializing mostly in high-end pre-owned office furniture and systems then seven years  selling and managing at a luxury automobile dealership. The dealership was around the corner from a factory outlet store of a major footwear company. One day while checking out the clearance shoes Bryan noticed a huge selection of large shoes in his size and bigger on sale for only $10 a pair.  Pick out a few pair for himself and thought it would be a great item to sell on eBay.  Up until then, Bryan had only been a hobby seller.  Armed with the eBay ID: Mr.Bigfoot, selling big shoes seemed like a natural fit.  continued
